Class Descriptions

MONDAY

Creative Drama (Grades: K – 2)                          Fee: $ 65
Creative Drama™ is an exciting class for children who love to imagine, pretend and dress in a variety of costumes. Each week, our instructor tells a different story for the students to practice and expand necessary theatrical skills. Costumes are provided for every student in each class. Students learn characterization, facial and vocal expression and basic stage direction. The last class will conclude with a demonstration for parents. Instructor: Rainbow Company.

Funtasticfit (Grades: K – 3)                          Fee: $ 55
Fun and games. Fast paced classes with 5 – 6 new activities every week. Activities include giant parachute, obstacle course, wacky relays, scooter races, giant balloon ball, fox tails and more. A prize for each child after every class! Instructor Funtastic Fitness.

Chess (Grades: 1 – 6)                            Fee: $ 60
The Armstrong Chess Club offers a fun environment to play the game of chess and improve strategic thinking skills. In addition to the rudiments and basic strategies of Chess, more advanced concepts, principles and their application are taught. Time for play is allotted later in each session. Small awards are given for getting chess problems correct. Instructor: Peter Snow, Chess Academy.

Baseball (Grades 2 – 6)                            Fee: $70
Learn the fundamentals of baseball correctly from a former college player, baseball camp directer, and high school baseball coach. Baseball instruction in hitting, pitching, fielding and baserunning will be the core of the class. Fun and varied drills in all facets of the game will fortify new acquired baseball skills. Students will have the opportunity to play modified games to heighten interest and motivation. Start preparing to become the baseball player you want to be. Please bring your baseball glove. Cartooning (Grades: 3 – 6)                           Fee: $95
Learn techniques on how to draw cartoon people, animals, situations and scenarios using easy-to-learn, effective drawing methods and tricks. Anyone can learn how to draw cartoons with appropriately placed shapes and lines in this fun and interactive class. Instructor: The Enrichment Centers, Inc.

Curtain Call (Grades: 3 – 6)                          Fee: $ 100
Curtain Call™ is designed for the reading student and challenges the imagination. Students learn character development through the text, the mechanics of blocking, projecting and all aspects of behaving realistically before a live audience. A script is provided and the students memorize their lines, memorize their blocking, and work together as a cast. Curtain Call™ provides opportunities for individuals who, not wishing to be on stage, would like to help in production, direction, or design of a performance. Partial costumes are provided for the final performance, taking place on the last day of class. The performance is for parents, relatives and friends of the students in Curtain Call™. TUESDAY

Spanish - Yo hablo español (Grades: K – 3)                        Fee: $ 80
Learn the language of the fastest growing demographic in the United States. Who knew that learning another language could be this much fun? Join us for a hands-on, activities-based Spanish class taught by Jabberü. Each class will be filled with fun activities that focus on a major theme, such as “Animal Kingdom” or “My Family”. Activities will include art projects, games and role-play. The experienced Jabberü instructor is a native Spanish speaker who will teach the class in immersion, proven to be the most effective way for children to learn a language. Parents will receive vocabulary and activity sheets, so that they know what their children are learning and how to reinforce that language at home. Jabberü has been named the best foreign language instruction for children by the readers of Family Magazine. Students who participated in the fall and/or winter session will be challenged with new material while the class also welcomes new students. Instructor: Jabberu.

Soccer Skills Clinic (Grades: K – 4)                        Fee: $ 65
Soccer Skills Clinic is a developmentally appropriate soccer program that captures the joy of the sport without adding competitive pressure. It offers a unique opportunity for beginner and intermediate soccer players to learn and improve their soccer skills in a fun, safe, and positive environment with professional coaches. Children learn the importance of teamwork, sportsmanship, and self-confidence through interactive fun games and small-sided games. Instructor: Brazilian Soccer Academy.

NEW!! Cheerleading (Grades: 2 – 6)            Fee: $ 65
CHEER-IT WITH SPIR-IT! Take your spirit to a higher level! Learn routines, cheers, motions and jumps that promote teamwork, fitness and FUN. We will work on basic gymnastics and dance movements (under supervision of instructors). Cheers include: Who Rocks the House, G-O Yell GO, Dynamite, and many more. You'll even get to make up your own cheer! Instructor: Overtime Athletics.

Lego Club (Grades: 3 – 6)                        Fee: $ 50
For everyone who loves legos! Bring your imagination – we’ll provide the rest! Have fun building with legos – a different theme each week. Creations will be displayed at the end of each session for co-builders and parents to enjoy! We need one to two parent volunteers for this class. For the volunteers, your child’s  class fee will be waived. The volunteer must attend each class. Instructor: Amanda Jasper.

Building Character Through Basketball (Grades: 1 – 6)            Fee: $ 65
This program integrates teaching the fundamentals of basketball with interactive exercises to building positive character traits. Our curriculum uses real-life scenarios to teach children why good character is important and how to display good character in our community as well as techniques for dealing with negative influences. This series of classes will focus on respect and enthusiasm.Our goal is to provide children the tools to be successful in life and make the right choices when faced with adversity. Sports are a natural medium to teach that message because students have fund and exercise while learning. Instructor: Winning Lives.

NEW!! Golf (Grades: 1 – 6)                                         Fee: $ 95
The John O’Leary Golf Academy after school program was designed to create a productive yet fun learning environment. The class focuses on a different aspect of golf every week, including chipping, pitching, irons, fairway woods and drivers. The class uses fun competitions and contests to see how each student is progressing and will cater to every age and any ability. John O’Leary has worked with PGA Tour winners to the very beginner and was nominated for the Mid -Atlantic teacher of the year in 2008 and 2009. He is an accomplished player having won over 25 events in his career and he played in the 2007 PGA Championship. Instructor: John O’Leary.

KidArt (Grades: 1 – 6)                                                                                Fee: $ 100
A multi-media art class designed for elementary school age children. This process-oriented, fine art multi-medium program is intended to enhance a student’s enjoyment of art and creative expression while building confidence and skill levels. The joy of individual expression is nurtured and celebrated with each young artist using student-grade and professional-grade materials such as pen & ink, pastels, charcoal, paints, plaster and clay. NEW!! Hip Hop Dance (Grades: 2 – 6)                        Fee: $ 95
Hip-Hop is an upbeat contemporary dance form, founded on buoyant rhythm and dynamic motion. In this course, students will learn the moves from such films as High School Musical and from other popular sources, and will practice the latest improvisations on basic urban-themed dance. Studying Hip-Hop, students enjoy all the benefits of physical exercise while developing body awareness, coordination, and improving their self-expression and confidence. Arts and Crafts (Grades: K – 2)                        Fee: $ 75
Get ready, get set, ART!!! This creative class will include jewelry making, model magic, painting, crafts from recycled items and much, much more. Explore art at your own pace in a fun and relaxed environment. Art made simple and fun for everyone! For those that took this class last session and enjoyed it, all projects will be NEW and different. Instructor: Julie Bronson, Art Ala Cart.

Learn the prestigious art of karate without leaving school. Karate Master Rod Batiste has been teaching kids for over thirty years. This class allows your child an opportunity for belt rank advancement.  You can elect to add the following items that will make your child’s experience even more safe and rewarding: uniform $42.95, hand pads 34.95, belt test at the end of the session $50 (all optional). NEW!! Skateboarding Basics (Grades: 1-6)                        Fee:$ 80
Radical, dude! Enjoy the thrills of skate boarding. No matter what skill level, this program is for you! American In-line presents a skateboarding program in a positive, supportive environment.  Learn to ride a skateboard safely including pushing, steering, ticktack turns, ollies, slides, grinds, ramps, jam time and more. Emphasis is on safety, etiquette and improvement. Learn fast, be safe, have fun. If your child wants to go to the skate park, this class must come first. Students must supply their own helmets and skateboards. Important note: If it rains on a Thursday, a make up class will be given the following Tuesday; if it rains that Tuesday, we will do what we can to make it up on a subsequent Tuesday. Unfortunately, refunds cannot be given for rain dates that are not able to be made up. Instructor: American Inline.

Robotics (Grades: 3-6)                        Fee:$ 110
After learning the basics of robot construction, students are given the opportunity to participate in a competitive robot-building activity within the context of real-world robotics. The class touches on subjects such as artificial intelligence, robots in art and literature, types of robots, different theories of robotics and perception and action systems. The class then divides into groups and constructs a robot sensitive to touch and sound, experimenting with different wiring architectures to manifest different behaviors. Each group then places their robot in an obstacle course and using sound, steers it towards a finish line, and may the fastest team win! Robotics kits included. Instructor: The Enrichment Centers.

Do you want to jump high, hit the ball hard and move quickly? Then join us for Bump! Set! Spike! This class teaches the basic skills of volleyball; serving, bumping, setting, spiking, blocking and digging. Challenge yourself on the Basket Serve Competition, have fun playing Pepper Ball, Spider Serve and Target Practice. You can test your skills each class during scrimmages. FRIDAY

Science Alive (Grades: K – 2)            Fee: $ 95
Science through exploration, observation, and inquiry. This method is a deliberate departure from textbook-centered and passive observation of scientific phenomena. Instead, the program emphasizes hands-on learning and thus engages the child in a total inquiry-based experience. As a result, students learn to become critical thinkers. Your child won't be bored for a minute, and the range of science that he or she will bring home will delight you. We see your children as scientists, ready to apply what they have learned or experienced to the unit at hand. Children become scientific partners with their teachers and gain knowledge and understanding through a process of questioning, hypothesis-testing, and drawing conclusions.
